The Fisheries Co-Management Council (FCC) is a Statutory Body established under the Fisheries Act 1995 to promote co-management of Victorian fisheries. The FCC takes instructions from, and provides independent advice to the Minister for Agriculture The Hon. Joe Helper MLA.
The FCC is working for the sustainable use of aquatic biological resources, managed in partnership for the benefit of the community.

Fisheries Co-Management Council Meeting No. 113 – 29 May 2008 

A Fisheries Victoria policy officer provided a summary of the Victoria’s Fishing Consultative Arrangements Review Discussion Paper. The paper outlines alternative options for new consultative arrangements between government and other stakeholders concerned with the management and use of Victoria’s fisheries.

 

Other items discussed at the meeting included a proposed Fisheries Co-Management Council Climate Change Workshop to discuss the need to promote strategic planning within Victoria’s fisheries to best adapt to potential future impacts of climate change. Victorian Fishing Awards and various matters relating to the Abalone Fishery Committee and its reporting requirements in accordance with the Victorian Abalone Fishery Management Plan.

 

The next FCC meeting will be held on 27 June 2008.

 

Abalone Fishery Committee Meeting No. 43 – 15 May 2008 

The AFC’s representative on the Victorian Abalone Fishery Management Plan (VAFMP) Steering Committee informed the committee regarding progress. Development of the new VAFMP has been deferred and until its completion the current plan will continue to operate.

 

The AFC were updated by Fisheries Victoria on the current status of the Abalone Viral Ganglioneuritis (AVG), and discussed various research/management options such as quarantine zones, fish-downs and closed seasons. The committee reviewed and discussed the draft Abalone Fishery Committee Performance Monitoring Summary as per its requirements under the Victorian Abalone Fishery Management Plan.

 

Also discussed, was the AFC’s summary for the 2007/08 Fishery Co-Management Council’s Annual Report as well as the Total Allowable Commercial Catch setting process and Research & Development priorities.  

 

The next AFC meeting will be held on a date to be determined.

 

Inland Fishery Committee Meeting No. 43 – 7 March 2008

A representative from Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) provided an update regarding fish monitoring surveys, further to a presentation given to the IFC in May 2007. Information was provided on the collation, sources and practical projects relating to data from fish surveys.

 

The IFC’s representative on the West Gippsland Fishery Management Plan (WGFMP) Steering Committee noted that he was close to endorsing the process followed in developing the plan. The IFC was also updated on the status of the Corangamite Fishery Management Plan, Port Phillip & Western Port Management Plan and the Wimmera Fishery Management Plan.

 

Other items of interest discussed included strengthening legislative protection for fish habitat in selected waters affected by drought conditions, stream classification and intended future Lake Wendouree re-stocking.

 

The next scheduled IFC meeting is for Tuesday 15 July 2008.

 

Fisheries Co-Management Council Meeting No. 112 – 29 February 2008 

On 1 February, Council was advised of the Minister’s approval to proceed with a re-appointment of Council & Fishery Committee members from 21 May to 31 December 2008 whilst a review progresses. Council discussed the re-appointment process and various issues relating to accommodation, budget and staff resources. Council is awaiting the release of the draft discussion paper from Fisheries Victoria to discuss future consultative arrangements.

 

Council discussed and provided recommendations to the Minister on the Abalone Total Allowable Commercial Catch 2008/09. Council noted that three members from its fishery committees nominated for appointment to the Fisheries Revenue Allocation Committee (FRAC). Council discussed various methods regarding the development of a framework for engagement with Victorian Indigenous fishing stakeholders.

 

Other items discussed included Western Zone Rock Lobster structural adjustment, the Minister’s endorsement of Council’s 2007/08 Business Plan, the Draft Corangamite Fishery Management Plan, an FCC-hosted Climate Change Workshop and the biennial Seafood Directions Conference 2009.

 

The next meeting will be held on 29 May 2008.

Victorian Fisheries Advisory Body (VicFRAB)
In April 2008  the VicFRAB called for Pre-proposal submissions to the Fisheries Research Development Corporation (FRDC) for the 2009-10 funding round. Pre-proposals will be assessed in June with with draft Full Applications required by 17 September. VicFRAB provide feedback to applicants prior to the 1 November deadline for Full Applications to FRDC. For more information see the Research page on this website. Applications should be submitted through the FRDC website on FishNet. www.frdc.com.au

FCC Annual Report 2006 - 2007
The Fisheries Co-Management Council's 2006 - 2007 Annual Report was tabled in State Parliament in October 2007 and is now available for download. The Report was prepared in keeping with Section 92(1) of the Fisheries Act 1995 and themed to promote the principle of co-management. Thanks to all who contributed to the Report...more...

Victorian Fisheries and Aquaculture Research Strategy 2005-2010
With input and direction from stakeholders the Research Committee and the FCC have developed the Victorian Fisheries & Aquaculture Research & Development Strategy. The Strategy was launched by the Minister for Agriculture at a workshop on Tuesday 19th April and now forms the basis for the call for preliminary research proposals - see Research page...
